Web site in Top 10 of Google
By Cal Hesson of SEO-Company-Services.com
There is much written about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and there is even more confusion about the topic. The purpose of this intel is to simplify and explain the basic steps required to get a web site onto the first page of the search engines. For web site owners that do not have the time to learn SEO themselves, it is sometimes easier to break an SEO project down into several steps. Step 1 - Keyword Research and Analysis Step 2 - Web Competition Research and Analysis Step 3 - On-page SEO Step 4 - Off-page SEO Step 1: Know Your Keyword Phrases This step takes a hard look at what keywords and keyword phrases should be targeted in order to get the right blend of quantity and quality of traffic. If you target the wrong keyword phrases you can end up with very limited or no traffic at all, or you can get lots of traffic that doesn’t convert. Although keyword research and analysis is one of the most critical aspects to get right, it is also one of the most overlooked and misunderstood activities of SEO. Many businesses owners tend to think their keywords are obvious, and sometimes they are, however experience has shown that more often than not the keyword phrases selected by business owners are too broad, too competitive, too specific or just are not aligned with the way people actually search for their products or services. Step 2: Know Your Web Competition In order to beat your web competition, you need to know how strong they are. This step finds the relative strengths (and weaknesses) of the web sites you need to beat in order to get on the First Page of the search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. You’ll never beat the search engines over time, but you will beat your web competition. In this step you determine the strength of the Top 10 web sites you're trying to beat, and this means analyzing their On-page SEO and the number and quality of back links they have pointing to their web site. Step 3: On-page SEO On-page SEO consists of modifications you make to your web site in order to make it more search engine friendly. An important note here is that every web page of a web site can and should be optimized, albeit for different keyword phrases. Rather than trying to get your Home Page found for dozens of keyword phrases, target those keyword phrases individually on the Inside Pages of your web site. Good On-page SEO can sometimes be so effective that web sites will rise to the top of Google without obtaining many back links. However, in markets with competitive keyword phrases you will almost always have to acquire back links to your web site. Step 4: Off-page SEO Off-page SEO is all about getting back links to your web site. Based on your web sites competition (as determined in Step 2), a back links acquisition strategy would be executed to get back links pointing to your web site. Back links are like votes for your web site and any web site in a competitive market will require back links. There are numerous and various methods for obtaining back links but it needs to be done properly to be effective and to not get your web site penalized. With the latest changes Google has been making, Off-page SEO has gotten significantly more difficult and time-consuming. Nearly all of the older and better known methods of getting back links have been negatively impacted because Google has been de-valuing these types of links for some time now. If you would like to learn more about getting back links, feel free to contact me. SEO is typically more involved than many web site owners originally think, and there are way too many bad SEO firms out there. If you decide to hire an SEO company, at the very least get a list of referrals and have the SEO Company provide absolute proof they can get a web site into the Top 10 of the search engines for competitive keyword phrases. Good luck on your SEO endeavors.

Great information, Cal. Thanks for the straight information and I'm sure that many folks will benefit from your intel. Best wishes. Frederick
Pretty accurate information. I found it interesting that you don't have a capture form on your website. An email address, phone number and street address was what I found. The link for contact on the SEO Training Institute goes to their site map. To me that is a strange way indeed for conversion. Mind if I ask the question I ask all SEO Companies? What keywords does your web page place for on the first page of Google?

Hello, To answer your last question first, my SEO web site ranks No. 2 in Google for 'SEO Company Services', which is exactly the service I provide. That is out of 7,760,000 competing web pages - without the quotes and from the ISP and Data Center my web query was answered from. With Google localization and personalization the total number of web page you see may vary. No email capture form, pretty lame, huh. I'm working on a new site design with all the bells and whistles but have just been too busy doing the SEO stuff. I guess that's not all bad. The SEO Training Institute site is a New WIP (Work In Progress). It will be set up for high-end SEO Professional Services where we teach mid-size companies how to dominate the entire first page of Google for competitive keyword phrases. One of my mid-tier clients has 7 out of the Top 10 for their industry. Anyway, I’ll get that SEO Training site done in the next month or so. I hope. Being an SEO, I’m usually never in a big hurry, since I know you have to circulate to percolate. Thanks for your comment! I also hope other SEO’s take up your challenge and say where their web sites place on the first page of Google. More people should ask that question!

Good placement on SEO Company Services I see someone has the domain without the hyphens. I will keep checking in for the new website. I am a little curious why you don't have meta tags on all your internal pages like keywords, description etc. I have started recently to add title tags to all my links as well. Is that something you would recommend for onsite SEO? That is the first thing nationalpositions commented on when they looked at my website. No title tags on the links.

Meta tags and internal pages, you're 100% right, I should have them. My bad, good catch though on your part. I probably figured I get them all tightened up in the new web site. BTW, I certainly stress to my clients to make sure THEY have them on their web sites. Regarding title tags on links, that's not my approach. I only put title tags on the web pages. HOWEVER, I'm a stickler for properly Anchor-texted links. Since 100% of my clients are in the Top 10 of Google for competitive keyword phrases, I think I'll stick with my approach. Let us all know how your title tags on links works out. I'm a little surprised they didn't mention about properly Anchor-texted links though, as that is generally the recommended approach. One thing is for sure, ask 5 SEO's their opinion and you'll be sure to get 5 different opinions. My suggestion to everyone is to go with a firm that can prove what they say, plus get client referrals too.
